Listed Building Renovations and Extension, Woodbridge

The Overview

Transform the interior of a late 18th Century semi-detached house and build a 1 ½ storey glazed extension to the rear to better connect internal and external spaces.

The Challenge

The Grade II listed, 2 storey brick-built property, is nestled between an idyllic characterful streetscape with views across meadowland. The building was set across stepped floor levels, restricting access to the rear garden and garage. The grandeur of the property’s proportions did not lend themselves to the tight and convoluted circulation.

The scheme needed to deliver a direct circulation route between the kitchen and lower-level rear garden and revitalise the interior to form a comfortable, sophisticated home.

The Solution

It was important to preserve and repair internal features and external character. In order to make the interior layout reflect that of 21st Century living, the interior was challenged by remodelling the ground floor and introducing refined fixtures and finishes throughout.

New black, metal glazed screens created a defined Living Room space, which originally opened into the Entrance Hall. Internal walls were remodelled to achieve the optimum kitchen layout, this was newly furnished to create a functional yet stylish space.

Internal finishes were inspired by the natural landscape of the Woodbridge area. Earthy tones, natural woods, metal and stone finishes, forest wallpaper and dark, nautical colour palettes anchor the interior within its surroundings, using a balance of dark and light shades.

A glazed, timber frame extension sits subtly against the rear elevation and appears almost ‘transparent’ in appearance, as it reflects the sun and daylight. It provides a light and airy link between the house and garden and accommodates a new cloakroom with a feature glass roof – making it perfect for stargazing!

The garden was also elegantly landscaped to form a comfortable stepped access from the new extension, down to the Lower Ground Reception room.
